Chapter 30
Klim
1987
Klim can hardly believe that a whole year has passed since the accident. Sometimes it's like nothing has changed. The seasons roll around, he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night. But then, suddenly, he will realise that he hasn't seen another living soul for over a week and it hits him like a thump in the chest. He could leave, go with the others who scattered themselves around the globe, but he knows he won't. This place is familiar, somewhere he had never planned on leaving, not even before the accident. Then there is her, the real reason for him staying here, buoyed by the hope that one day she might come back to him. Heâll wait. Klim will wait forever if he has to.
He remembers the first time he saw her, when her family arrived and caused a stir in the village. She was, to his eyes, a queen. From her stature and aloof quality, it was as though she knew that she was something extremely unique and special, like a hummingbird or a rare treasure. As they grew and he admired her from afar, it came to a point when suddenly she was taking notice of him, and then the magic happened; he was allowed to adore her publicly. He thought they would be together forever, and even when he started hearing rumours about her with other young men, he dismissed it as envy. Then she told him herself, that she wanted to be with someone else. That night, he made love to her with all of his emotions etched plainly on his face, and when it was finished he was sure that she would see nobody would love her like he did. But she had left anyway.
It's hard to still love her, especially with the memory of the last time he saw her that lays low in a dark corner of his mind, only to rush at him, pulsating in its awfulness at unexpected moments.
That day, when he and Simon and Sissy had searched the land across the water for her, plays on his mind all the time. He still feels the excitement that he had felt when he quite accidentally stumbled upon the caravan on the edge of the woods. He had called out, but it was only when he knocked on the door that it had fallen open beneath his hand, allowing him to peer into the small interior. He was struck by how clean and tidy it was, he had not been expecting that. The curtains had been closed and the room was dim, but there was enough light to see the form of a woman huddled in the corner of the sofa. He moved closer, whispering her name. It was only when he was towering over her that she realised he was there. She had smiled, lazily, a corner of her mouth drooping and saliva bubbling between her full lips.
That she was naked was not the first thing that he noticed.
